Treatment of Sihr

In the case of an enchantment / magic / sorcery, one must find the cause of the magic so that the disease can be cured.

Zayd ibn Arqam reported that a Jew named Labid Ibn Asam enchanted the Prophet s.a.w. When the Prophet s.a.w. began to suffer under the effect, Jibril a.s. came to him, revealing to him the Mu'awidhatan (Sura Al-Falaq and An-Nas), saying, "Surely it was a Jew who uttered this spell upon you and the magical amulet is in a certain well." The Prophet s.a.w. sent Ali ibn Abu Talib r.a. to bring the amulet. When he had come back with it, the Prophet s.a.w. ordered him to untie the knots (of the amulet) one after the other, and to read a verse of the suras at every knot untied. After he had done this, the Prophet s.a.w. appeared as if he had been freed from a bondage. [Ibn Humaid and Al-Bayhaqi]

Perform the normal initial procedures as described in the chapter "The Healing". To find the Buhul, it is advisable to do it in the patient's house after it has been "cleaned" (from all pictures, etc.) and if possible sprayed with Ruqyah water, because the Buhul could also be hidden in the house.

One way to find the Buhul is to ask the Jinn present in the patient. Of course it is obviuos that he is mostly lying, but one can try it, since Jinn are bad liars. With a little cross-examination one might find it.

Otherwise, one recites Sura Al-Anam, verse 103, three or seven times:

La tudrikuhul abshaaru wa huwa yudrikul abshaara wa huwal-lathieful chabier.

Vision comprehendeth Him not, but He comprehendeth [all] vision. He is the Subtile, the Aware.

Then pray to Allah to show one the Buhul. Use names of Allahs like "Ya Hadi" (the one giving guidance) - "Ya Wajid" (the all-finding and getting) - "Ya Latief" (the one who encompasses the most subtle in all dimensions) - "An-Nur" (the light) until the Buhul has found, whether by searching, inspiration or dream.

If the spell is tied to something outside the body, one destroys it as described in the Appendix (How to destroy a Buhul?).

If it is in the body, one can use the following method:

As usual, perform the initial procedures as described in the chapter "The Healing". One recites Sura Yasin, verse 9, with the intention of imprisoning the Jinn. Then blow on the index finger and the middle finger, and describe with them a circle around the affected area (counter-clockwise), either at the spot where the Buhul is suspected, or where it aches, itches, or there is a numb feeling.

Wa ja'alnaa min baini aidiehim saddan wa min chalfihim saddan fa-aghshainaahum fahum la yubshiruun.

And We have set a bar before them and a bar behind them, and [thus] have covered them so that they see not.

Then one recites Al-Anfal 17 and Al-Mu'minun 115 near the fingertips of the right hand and blows on them.

Al-Anfal 17

Falam taqtuluuhum wa laa kinnAllaha qatalahum. Wa maa ramaita isramaita wa laa kinnAllaha ramaa. Wa liyubliyal mu'miniena minhu bala-an hasanan. InnAllaha samie'un 'aliem.

Ye [Muslims] slew them not, but Allah slew them. And thou [Muhammad] threwest not when thou didst throw, but Allah threw, that He might test the believers by a fair test from Him. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Knower.

Al-Mu'minun 115

Afahasibtum annamaa chalaqnaakum 'abatsan wa annakum ilaina laturja'uun.

Deemed ye then that We had created you for naught, and that ye would not be returned unto Us?

Grasp the affected area with your fingertips (of course, do not clench too tightly), and, imagine, you pull out the disease / Jinn / spell, while saying "Bismillahi Allahu akbar".

If one should not find the Buhul, it already helps to understand where it is hidden, e.g. hidden in a well or thrown into the sea, and what kind of magic it is. The patient will then already feel relief. References to where the Buhul is located come from the patient himself, usually in a dream: if he dreams, for example, of much water, one knows that it is in a river or in the sea; if he dreams of being at high altitudes, e.g. in an airplane or on a mountain, one knows that it is hanging on a tree; he dreams of graves and the dead, it is hidden in a cemetery, and so on.

The kind of spell also manifests itself through the patient: as shown in the above hadith, the Prophet s.a.w. felt like tied, because the magic were knots. For example, if the patient says, "I am moving always in a circle," one knows that it is hung to a tree; if he says "I feel like dead," it means that it is in a graveyard.

In any case, the Ruqyah-bath against sihr should be carried out like already described, especially when pulling out the magic should not work. In addition, one should also do cupping where the problem is, in order to pull out the magic or to allow it an exit. Furthermore, the house should be sprinkled with Ruqyah-water, as described in the chapter "Variant of the Ruqyah bath and cleaning of the house of Jinn or Sihr" and follow the general protective measures.

Returning the spell

Sorcery one should first only try to treat. If, however, it turns out that after the treatment the sorcerer sends more and more Jinn, one can consider sending the spell back to him, which is allowed under the Shariah (Qisas), although patience may be better:

If ye punish, then punish with the like of that wherewith ye were afflicted. But if ye endure patiently, verily it is better for the patient. [An-Nahl 126]

Fighting the sorcerer is much more effective than fighting every time the Jinn, which has been sent.

One should gather the whole family of the patient and his close friends to pray together, which is more effective. Each one performs the initial procedure for himself as described in the chapter "The Healing". One should pray together the upcoming Compulsory Prayer and then 2 x 2 Rakaat Nawafil. During the last prostration one asks Allah to return the magic and illness to the sorcerer or envious person. One begins the supplication best with "Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum birahmatika astaghith" (O Living, O Eternal, by your mercy I beg for help).

After the final Salaam one recites the Suras al-Fatihah, al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq, an-Nas, and the verse of the throne (see Appendix), three or seven times. Then Sura an-Nahl 26:

Qad makaral-lasina min qablihim, fa atAllahu bunyaanahum-minal qawaa'idi facharra 'alaihimus-suqfu min fauqihim wa ataahumul 'asaabu min haitsu la yash'uruun.

Those before them plotted, so Allah struck at the foundations of their building, and then the roof fell down upon them from above them, and the doom came on them whence they knew not;

And Sura al-Fiel:

Alam tara kaifa fa'Ala rabbuka biashhaabil fiel. Alam yaj'al kaidahum fi tadhliel. Wa arsala 'alaihim thairann abaabiel. Tarmiehim bi hijaaratinm-min sijjiel. Faja'alahum ka'ashfinm-makuul.

Hast thou not seen how thy Lord dealt with the owners of the Elephant? Did He not bring their stratagem to naught, and send against them swarms of flying creatures, which pelted them with stones of baked clay, and made them like green crops devoured [by cattle]?

Recite these three, seven, or eleven times with all the ones assembled, with the intention of sending back the disease to the sorcerer. One should be sure that Allah accepts the petition of the oppressed, as the Prophet s.a.w. said.
