([This is] a Scripture that We have revealed unto thee,
full of blessing, that they may ponder its revelations,
and that men of understanding may reflect.
Sad 29
God Almighty has designed His Book in such a way that no one can produce anything like it, and the Qur'an itself expresses its own brilliance in many verses and proclaims that no book can match it. The miracles of the Qur'an encompass all fields of knowledge, be it literature, linguistics, science, history, psychology, ethics and much more.
When the Quran was revealed in the 7th century, the people of Arabia were fascinated by the sheer eloquence of the Quran's words. This was because they themselves were known at the time for their linguistic skills and their passion for literature and poetry. Nowadays, people, especially non-Arabs, no longer appreciate this miracle. For today's generations, however, other aspects of the Quran, such as its scientific statements, are coming to the fore. And since we live in a digital age where numbers have never been as important as they are today, the best way for people to understand the divine nature of the Quran is to look at its numerical miracles.
The numerical peculiarities in the Qur'an are extremely numerous, and those listed below are only the tip of the iceberg. Individually, these peculiarities could of course be coincidence, construct or well-intentioned interpretation, but not in this great variety and in this peculiarity. The Qur'an says: "This Qur'an cannot possibly be devised without Allah." (10.37) And indeed, attempting to reproduce the numerical arrangements in the Qur'an is, without exaggeration, an impossible endeavor. No matter how knowledgeable a person becomes, no one can ever produce literature that is not only linguistically profound and of the highest standard, but also contains a complex, perfectly organized numerical system. No one who has ever written a piece of literature has made sure that the arrangement of his letters, words and chapters result in multiples of different numbers, because that would detract from the quality of his writing, to say the least.
It should also be remembered that the Prophet, peace be upon him, was illiterate and there was no summary of the Qur'an in written form in his time, but it was primarily memorized and passed on orally. Furthermore, that the Qur'an was revealed piecemeal over a period of 23 years. Whenever verses were revealed, Muhammad, peace be upon him, said in which surah and in which place they belonged. Editing was no longer possible afterwards.
Surah al-Kautsar
Surah al-Kautsar is the shortest surah in the Qur'an and was revealed to the Prophet, peace be upon him, on the occasion of the death of his son Ibrahim to comfort him. This surah consists of only three verses and is coded with the number 10 in various ways.
- This surah uses only 10 words in all.
- The first verse uses 10 different letters.
- The second verse uses 10 different letters.
- The third verse uses 10 different letters.
- Of all these letters, 10 letters only appear once.
- The first letter "Alif" is used 10 times.
- Each verse ends with the letter "ra", which is the 10th letter in the Arabic alphabet.
- 10 different letters are used to form all the last words of the three verses.
- 10 different letters are used to form all the second words of the three verses.
- 10 different letters are used to form all the remaining words of the three verses (except the second and the last word).
- In the Basmallah at the beginning of the surah, the letter "ra" is in the 10th position, counting from both the beginning and the end.
- The Basmallah itself is made up of 10 different letters.
- Only 10 suras in the Qur'an end with the letter "ra", of which al-Kautsar is the tenth.
- Only 10 words end with "ra" from the beginning of this surah to the end of the Qur'an.
- Surah al-Kautsar begins with "alif" and "nun", which is translated as "verily", and the last letter is "ra". There is only one other surah in the Quran that is the same. It is Surah 97 and comes 10 surahs before al-Kautsar.
- From "verily" in Surah 97 to "verily" in Kautsar, 10 other verses begin with "verily".
- The letter "ra" appears 10 times in Surah 97.
- From the last verse of Surah 97 to the first verse of al-Kautsar, 10 words end with "ra".
Sea - land mass - ratio
The word "sea" is mentioned 32 times in the Qur'an, the word "earth" 13 times. 32 + 13 equals 45. 32 is 71.11% of the total 45, and 13 is 28.88% of the total. This is the percentage of sea and land mass on the earth's surface.
Iron core
Science tells us that the center of the earth is made of iron. The Qur'an consists of 114 suras. Half or the middle of 114 is 57, and this sura is called "iron".From the beginning of the Koran to the word "iron" there are 5100 verses. It is 5100 kilometers from the surface of the earth to the iron layer.
The bee
"The bee" is the 16th surah of the Qur'an. Science tells us that male bees have 16 chromosomes, while females have 16 pairs of chromosomes. The queen hatches from the egg after 16 days.
Man and woman
The word "man" and the word "woman" are each mentioned 23 times in the Koran. Not only is it amazing that the two words appear the same number of times, but as we know, humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes and 23 chromosomes come from the father and 23 from the mother.
The sun
The word "sun" appears for the first time in the Koran in Surah 2:258 and for the last time in Surah 91:1. There are 5778 verses between these words. The surface temperature of the sun is 5778 degrees Kelvin.
Sirius
The brightest star in the sky is Sirius. It is mentioned in the Koran in Sura at-Tariq. In this sura, the word "star" and the word "earth" are separated by 861 words. The distance between Earth and Sirius is 8.61 light years.
The Night Journey
Allah tells us in the surah "the Night Journey" in the first verse: "Praise be to Him Who made His servant travel by night from the Haram Mosque to the Aqsa Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, that We may show him (something) of Our signs. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing." (17:1) It is about the night journey of the Prophet, peace be upon him, from the mosque in Mecca to the mosque in Jerusalem in one night, which the idolaters naturally mocked. The mosque in Mecca is mentioned before this verse in verse 9:28. There are 767 other verses between this verse and the above verse. There are 767 miles of distance between these two mosques.
Months and days
- The Koran says in Sura 9:36 that a year has 12 months. The word "month" in its singular form is used 12 times in the Qur'an.
- The word "day" in its singular form is used 365 times in the Qur'an.
- The word "the Day", as an allusion to the Day of Resurrection, is used 70 times in the Qur'an, and the compound word "Day of Resurrection" is also used 70 times.
- The plural forms of the word "day" ("ayam" = days; "yumain" = two days) are used together 30 times, i.e. as often as a normal month has days.
- The word "days" (ayam) is mentioned 27 times, as is the word "moon", and the word "2 days" (yumain) is used 3 times. 27.3 days is the time in which the moon rotates around its own axis and orbits the earth.
- We also get the number 27.3 in another way: The word "moon" is mentioned 27 times, as already mentioned, and the word "crescent moon" 3 times.
The death of the Prophet s.a.w.
The word "natawafayanak" is used three times in the Qur'an. It means "cause you to die". It refers to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. Now let's see in which three surahs this word was used:
40.77: "Then have patience [O Muhammad]. Lo! the promise of Allah is true. And whether we let thee see a part of that which We promise them, or [whether] We cause thee to die, still unto Us they will be brought back."
13.40: "Whether We let thee see something of that which We have promised them, or make thee die [before its happening], thine is but conveyance [of the message]. Ours the reckoning."
10.46: "Whether We let thee [O Muhammad] behold something of that which We promise them or [whether We] cause thee to die, still unto Us is their return, and Allah, moreover, is Witness over what they do."
- So we see that the word is used in Surah 40, 13 and 10. 40 + 13 + 10 is 63, which was the age of the Prophet, peace be upon him, at his death. 40 was also the age when he was called to be a prophet; 13 was the time he spent in Mecca as a prophet, and 10 was the time he spent in Medina.
- Verse 10.46, where the word "cause you to die" is used for the first time, consists of 63 words, which is also the number of years at Muhammad's death, peace be upon him.
- If we add up all the verse numbers where the word is used, i.e. 77 + 40 + 46, we get 163, which is the 38th prime number. There are 38 verses in the surah "Muhammad".
Colors of paradise and hell
We know from many verses and hadiths that the color green is associated with paradise. For example, people in paradise have green clothes (18:31). The color black is associated with hell.
- The word "green" appears 8 times in the Koran. Paradise has 8 gates.
- The word "black" appears 7 times in the Koran. Hell has 7 gates.
- In a hadith, the Prophet, peace be upon him, says that Hellfire is seventy times hotter than earthly fire. Because it is so hot, it is black. And indeed, we know today that fire at extremely high temperatures like 42,000 degrees Celcius appears black. Earthly fire is about 600 degrees in the middle x 70 = 42,000 degrees Celcius (7000 Kelvin). This is why astronomers use a method called "black body radiation" to identify extremely hot stars.
- The plural of gate is "Abwab". This word is used in 15 verses, exactly as often as the gates of paradise and hell put together.
- In the seventh verse, which mentions "gates" (i.e. the number equal to the number of gates of hell), we read: "So enter the gates of hell to abide therein forever. Indeed, the abode of the arrogant is terrible."
- In the eighth verse, which mentions "gates" (i.e. the number equal to the number of gates of paradise), we read: "... the gardens of Eden, whose gates are open to them."
Colors
The word "colors" is mentioned seven times in the Quran. This corresponds to the seven colors of the rainbow.
- In the first verse in which the word "colors" is mentioned (16.13), it is in seventh place, with six words before and after it.
- The number of letters in this verse is 49, which is 7 x 7.
- Verse 13 in Surah 16 also consists of 13 words. If we multiply 13 by the place value "colors", i.e. 13 x 7, we get 91. 91 is the number we get if we add up all the verses up to this verse.
- All the words in these verses added together are 147 = 7 x 7 x 3 (The word "colors" mentioned 7 times in the Quran; 7 colors of the rainbow; 3 main colors from which the other colors can be created).
- 6 words before and 6 words after the word "colors" make 12, the number of times "white" is mentioned in the Qur'an (white is all colors).
- The word "colors" is mentioned 7 times, but in 6 verses. 7 + 6 is 13, which is the number of the verse and the number of its words. Furthermore, 13 is a prime number, the 6th.
- The word "colors" is mentioned in 4 surahs. The numerical value of the letters of "colors" in Arabic added together is 77. If we multiply 4 by 77 we get 308, which is the sum of the number of verses containing the word "colors".
- We remember: "colors" is mentioned in 6 verses and 4 surahs.
The only letter that is used 6 times in all these verses is "tha".
he only letter that is used 4 times in all these verses is "dha".
The letter "tha" appears 114 times in these 4 surahs, i.e. as often as there are suras in the Qur'an. The letter "dha" also appears 114 times in these 4 surahs!
Even and uneven
If we write the numbers of the surahs one below the other and next to them the number of verses, when we add these two numbers together we get exactly 57 even and odd numbers. The sum of all the even numbers is the sum of the verses, and the sum of the odd numbers is the sum of the numbers of the surahs!
6236 is the number of numbered verses according to the most popular style of recitation, known as Hafs bin Aasim. This number differs slightly from other recitations; perhaps these differences signify the existence of multiple numerical arrangements. For example, another style of recitation has 6234 numbered verses. This together with the 112 non-numbered verses would give 6346, which is 19 x 334. Also, if we add the digits 6348 together, we get 19: 6 + 3 + 4 + 6. See the next point for the significance of the number 19. (Please note that this does not mean that there are different versions of the Qur'an. There are only different styles of recitation).
The number 19
"Above it are nineteen. We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt." (al-Muddattir 30-31)
The number 19 is supposed to be a temptation for unbelievers, but is it supposed to strengthen the faith of believers? How could that be?
As we will see, the prime number 19 appears consistently in the Qur'an, either singly or in multiples. The believers see that this could not possibly have been coincidence or planned by Muhammad s.a.w., while the unbelievers will dismiss this as nonsense.
- The sum of the words in Surah al-Muddattir before the above verse is 95, or 19 x 5.
- The sum of the words in verse 31, which emphasizes the significance of the number 19, is 57, i.e. 19 x 3.
- The sum of the words in the first 19 verses of this surah is also 57 or 19 x 3.
- The sum of all the words of this sura before the word 19 is 361 or 19 x 19.
- The sum of the words in the first 5 verses revealed to the Prophet, peace be upon him, is 19.
- If you count the letters of these 5 verses, you get 76 or 19 x 4.
- The surah itself has 19 verses.
- The surah is the 19th surah counted from the end of the Koran.
- If one counts the letters of this entire surah, one obtains 285 or 19 x 15.
- The number 285 appears several times in the Qur'an, for example in Surah 72, which consists of 285 words and whose last verse reads: "...and that He encompasses what is with them, and He comprehends the number of everything." God points out here that these numbers are not random but have a meaning, like everything in His creation.
- The first verse of the Qur'an consists of 19 letters.
- The sum of all suras of the Koran is 114, i.e. 19 x 6.
- The first letter of the Qur'an (ba) is repeated 19 times in the first 114 words.
- The last letter of the Koran (sien) is repeated 19 times in the last 114 words.
- The last revealed surah (al-Nasr) has 19 words, its first verse has 19 letters.
- As already seen, if you add the number of each surah with the respective verses, you get 57 even and odd numbers, i.e. 19 x 3.
- The Basmallah, which is translated into German as "In the name of Allah, the All-Bountiful, the Merciful", has 19 letters.
- Every surah except surah 9 begins with the basmallah, but in surah 27 it occurs twice. It therefore appears 114 times in the Qur'an, or 19 x 6.
- From the missing basmallah in surah 9 to the additional one in surah 27, there are exactly 19 surahs (including surahs 9 and 27).
- The total number of words between the two basmallahs in surah 27 is 342, which corresponds to 19 x 18.
- The sum of the numbers of the surahs from 9 to 27 is also 342, i.e. 19 x 18.
- The last revelation (Surah 110) consists of 19 words.
- The first verse of the last revelation (110:1) has 19 letters.
- The Koran mentions 30 numbers. The sum of these numbers, 162146, is equal to 19 x 8534.
- Fourteen different Arabic letters form 14 sets of "Qur'anic initials" that precede 29 surahs. The total number, 57, is equal to 19 x 3.
- The sum of the numbers of the 29 surahs with Qur'anic initials is 822. If one adds the 14 sets of initials, the result is 836, i.e. 19 x 44.
- Between the first initialized surah (surah 2) and the last (surah 68) there are 38 non-initialized suras, which corresponds to 19 x 2.
- Between the first and the last initialed surah we find 19 sets of alternating "initialed" and "un-initiated" surahs.
- The number of occurrences of the letter "Q" in suras such as "Qaf" and "Ashuraa" is 57 (3 x 19).
- If one counts the letter "Q" in every nineteenth verse of the entire Qur'an, the total is 76, i.e. 19 x 4.
- The letters "Ya" and "Sin" in Sura Yasin occur 285 times, i.e. 19 x 15.
- The word thunder is mentioned twice in the Qur'an. The first time it is mentioned is in verse 2.19, the second time in the sura "thunder" itself, in verse 13.13. Both verses contain 19 words. Both verses contain the same number of letters.
- And so on …
The number 7
Just as God created the firmament and the stars in order and symmetry, He also created the Qur'an. He points this out by saying in the Qur'an: "It is He Who created for you all that is on the earth and then turned to the heavens and formed them into seven heavens." (2:29) This is the first place where the number seven is mentioned. The last place in the Qur'an where it is mentioned is 78:12: "And We have built over you seven firm (heavens)."
- In 2:29, where the number seven is mentioned for the first time, there are 28 verses (7 x 4).
- In 78:12, where the number seven is mentioned for the last time, there are 28 verses (7 x 4).
- From Sura 2 to Surha 78 there are 77 surahs (7 x 11).
- From verse 29 in surah 2 to verse 12 in sura 78 there are 5649 verses (807 x 7).
- From the first verse of Surah 2 to the last verse of Surah 78 there are 5705 verses (815 x 7).
- From the first verse of the Koran to the last verse of Surah 78 there are 5712 verses (816 x 7).
- If we add the number of surahs and verses in the following way: 114 + 6346 - 1146346, then we see that this number is divisible by 7: 1146236 = 163748 x 7. This even works if we write the number backwards: 6326411 = 903773 x 7. The number 1146236 itself consists of 7 digits that add up to 23, the number of years in which the Qur'an was revealed.
- If we add the number of years in which the Qur'an was revealed and the number of verses in the same way: 23 + 6236 - 236236, then we also see that this number is divisible by 7: 236236 = 33748 x 7. This also works if we write the number backwards: 632632 = 89089 x 7.
- If we add the number of years in which the Qur'an was revealed and the number of surahs: 23 + 114 - 23114, then we also see that this number is divisible by 7: 23114 = 3302 x 7. And this also works if we write the number backwards: 41132 = 5876 x 7.
- If we add the number of suras and the number of the first surah: 114 + 1 - 1141, then we also see that this number is divisible by 7: 1141 = 163 x 7. This number in itself adds up to 7 = 1 + 1 + 4 +1.
- The first word in the Quran "bism" - "in the name" is mentioned 115 times in the Quran, the last word "an-Nas" - "people" is mentioned 241 times. 241115 = 34445 x 7.
- The first word that was revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him) ("Iqra" - "read") is mentioned 3 times in the Qur'an, the last word ("yaslamun" - "treated unjustly") is mentioned 115 times. 315 = 45 x 7.
- The word "Day of Judgment" is mentioned 70 times (10 x 7); "Hell" is mentioned 77 times (11 x 7); number of letters of Arabic that make up the Qur'an: 28 = 4 x 7; number of letters of the initials that begin the 29 suras: 14 = 2 x 7; number of suras that mention the seven heavens: 7; and so on ... There is a whole book just about the numerical peculiarities of the number seven in the Qur'an: The marvels of the number seven in the Noble Qur'an.
Al-Fatihah
Al-Fatihah is the opening surah of the Qur'an, which must be recited by believers at least 17 times a day, namely during the 5 daily obligatory prayers. It consists of 7 verses, 29 words and 143 letters.
- The first word in the first verse has 3 letters, the second word 4, the third 6 and the fourth also 6. If we follow the Arabic from right to left, we get the number 6643. 6643 = 949 x 7.
- The surah uses 21 letters: 3 x 7.
- If we add up the letters of the first word of all the verses in the surah, we get 31 letters. If we add the letters of the second word of all the verses, we also get 31 letters. And if we add the letters of the third word of all the verses verses, we also get 31 letters, although the 3rd verse contains only two words.
- The number of letters that form the name Allah in this surah is also 31.
- All verses of this surah end with the letters "mim" or "nun". "Mim" is used in 7 words, and "nun" is also used in 7 words.
- The surah is mentioned elsewhere in the Qur'an as follows: "And We have given you seven oft-repeated verses, and the great Qur'an." (15:87) This verse also contains 7 words.
- The middle word of these 7 words has only two letters, namely "mim" and "nun".
- "Mim" is used 3 times in this verse, exactly as often as verses in al-Fatihah end with "mim". "Nun" is used 4 times in this verse, exactly as many times as verses in al-Fatihah end with "nun". This, of course, brings their total number to 7.
Adam and Jesus
In Surah Ali Imran, verse 59 we read: "Surely the likeness of Jesus is with Allah as the likeness of Adam. He created him from earth. Then He said to him, "Be!" and there he was." Allah emphasizes the likeness of Adam and Jesus by the following:
- Both are mentioned 25 times in the Koran.
- Before the verse Ali Imran 59, both prophets are mentioned separately 6 times.
- They are then mentioned separately a further 18 times.
Noah
Surah Nuh (Noah) is the 71st sura and has 28 verses.
- If we subtract the number of verses from the number of the surah, we get 71 - 28 = 43. Noah is mentioned 43 times by name in the Qur'an.
- Noah is mentioned for the last time in Surah Nuh. After this mention, there are 43 surahs that do not mention Noah. And before this mention, there are also 43 surahs that do not mention Noah.
- The "people of Noah" are mentioned 14 times in the Qur'an. The 14th prime number is 43.
- Surah Noah has 28 verses. Noah is mentioned in 28 surahs. Noah is mentioned specifically as person 28 times (e.g. not as Noah's ark or Noah's wife).
Al-Kahfi
In the surah "The Cave", we are told of some young men who fled from oppression and were put to sleep by God in a cave for 300 years: "And they dwelt in their cave for three hundred years and nine more." The word "dwelt" stands out because it is used six times in this surah in a grammatical form that is not otherwise used for this word in the Qur'an. And, of course, it is closely linked to the miracle itself that someone can sleep for 309 years!
- If we count the words after the first word "dwelt" up to the last word "dwelt", we see that there are 309 words.
- The 299th and 300th word is the word three hundred itself.
- After that there are another 9 words until the last "dwelt".
- 300 years according to the solar calendar is just as long as 309 years according to the lunar calendar.
- Furthermore, it can be noted that Surah al-Kahfi is Surah 18; the sleepers in the cave are mentioned in verse 18, and that their whole story is 18 verses long.
An-Naml
Surah an-Naml (the ants) is the 27th surah of the Qur'an and consists of 93 verses. It begins with the initials "Tha" and "Sin".
- In the surah, the letter "Tha" appears 27 times, which is the same as the number of the surah.
- The letter "Sin" appears 93 times in the surah, which is equal to the number of verses.
- The name "Allah" is mentioned 27 times in the surah, i.e. the same as the number of the surah.
- The verse that begins with the name "Allah" has 27 letters.
- The 27th letter of the Arabic alphabet is the letter "Waw". The first verse in which "Waw" does not appear is the 27th verse, whereas it appears once in 15 verses, twice in another 15 verses, three times in another 15 verses, four times in another 15 verses and even five times in another 15 verses!
- All in all, the letter "waw" appears 333 times in Surah 27. 3 x 3 x 3 is 27.
The night of fate
The Prophet's companion Abdullah ibn Abbas r.a., a cousin of the Prophet s.a.w. and one of the best connoisseurs of the Qur'an, once had a disagreement with Umar r.a., the second caliph, about when the Night of Destiny was. On the Night of Destiny, the Qur'an was sent down from the Guarded Tablet to the lowest heaven, from where it was revealed piece by piece by the angel Gabriel a.s. to the Prophet s.a.w.. It is still a special night in the last ten days of Ramadan, when the reward for a believer's good deeds is far greater than at other times. Umar r.a. was of the opinion that the night was on the 23rd night, whereas ibn Abbas r.a. was of the opinion that it was on the 27th night, and he justified this with the first two points below:
- The Night of Destiny is mentioned three times in the Surah "al-Qadr" in question. If you add up all the letters of these three mentions, you get 27.
- The 27th word is "hia" - "she", which refers to the night of destiny: "Peace is she (the night) until the dawn."
- If you count the words in the surah backwards, the 27th word is "night".
- The surah "al-Qadr" is surah 97 in the Quran. The surah in which the word "Qur'an" occurs most frequently is surah 17. 97 + 17 = 114, which is the total number of all surahs in the Qur'an.
- Verse 97 in surah 17, on the other hand, has 27 words.
- The letters that form the name "Allah" are used 44 times in Sura "al-Qadr". Surah 44 is the only surah in the Qur'an that mentions the Night of Destiny in the first six verses.
- These verses have 115 letters, the same number as the surah "al-Qadr".
- However, these six verses consist of 29 words, while "al-Qadr" consists of 30 words. Well, the month of Ramadan is sometimes 30 and sometimes only 29 days long!
- If we add 29 and 30 together, we get 59, the number of verses in Sura 44.
- If we count the letters that make up "al-Qur'an" in the first six verses of Surah 44 and in Surah "al-Qadr", we also get 59 in each case.
- The two initials of Sura 44 (ha, mim) appear in its first six verses and in the surah "al-Qadr" 27 times each.
- The Night of Destiny is mentioned in surah 44 exactly after 27 letters.
As already mentioned, the above-mentioned peculiarities are only a small part of the Qur'an's numerical peculiarities. Research into these peculiarities is still in its infancy. Many traditional scholars are somewhat skeptical or even dismissive of this research because they fear that something is being interpreted into the Qur'an that was perhaps not God's intention. And it is true that research should be limited as far as possible to simply listing these peculiarities and not to seeking deeper meanings, making predictions or even using it as a basis for Islamic law. The aim is not to develop an Islamic Kabbalah. It is enough to show that these peculiarities in their multitude cannot possibly be coincidence or the work of man in order to strengthen the faith and to convince non-Muslims of Islam. Thereby the purpose has already been achieved.
