Use Five Things before Five Others!

The Messenger Muhammad, the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

Use five before five:

  • • Use your life before your death
  • • and your health before your illness
  • • and your youth before your old age
  • • and your wealth before your poverty
  • • and your free time before your being busy.

Take a lesson from those who died before you! Among them were kings and rulers who possessed great power and wealth on earth. But what did they take with them into the grave? And among the dead there were also very young people. Did they all expect that death would overtake them so early? Listen to the words of the Prophet and send ahead much good for the hereafter during your lifetime, so that after death you are not among those who regret.

Perform your duties before illnesses prevent you from doing so.

Use your wealth not only for this world, but also for the hereafter: Give to the poor and needy! Support your relatives, neighbours, and brothers and sisters in Islam! Remember how your wealth brings the greatest benefit not only to you but to all, and that ultimately everything is only lent by God! Do not let yourself be blinded by material things and be generous, so that you are not later among those who will say: If only I had given!

Do not allow time to simply pass by, but use it:

  • • (As a non-Muslim:) Use your heart and your intellect to find out whether Islam is truly God's religion!
  • • Use every breath for the remembrance of God and good deeds, and remember that this life is only a blink of an eye compared to eternity, but that here the course is set.

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (r.a.), the son-in-law of the Prophet (s.a.w.), said: People are asleep! Then, when they die, they awaken!

Do not sleep away the things that bring you benefit for this world and the hereafter, so that you are not among those who will say:

O our Lord! Now we have seen and heard.

Let us return, so that we may do what is right.

Behold, now we have certainty!

(Surah 32, 12)
